Design and Materials
Conform air cushions are constructed of individual seven sided rubber air cells. The unique shape allows each air cell to move independently in any direction but will not allow the cell to collapse. Each cell is interconnected through interlinked air channels, allowing free movement of air from one cell to another. The bottleneck design at the base of each cell allows for the use of the Conform accessories. Conform air cushions are manufactured from natural rubber 24-015NK:green. This medical rubber was chosen for it's inherent properties of strength and durability. It is supple and soft to the touch, but elastic and stretchable which greatly improves the interface pressures and friction and shearing forces. Each cell is able to stretch yet will not tear or become solid if over inflated.
Rubber contrary to man-made materials is heat bonded and not glued. Glue ages and cracks allowing air to escape, heat bonding assures the cushions longevity. This advanced material choice therefore assures a more durable and reliable product. Conform air cushions have a two year manufacturer's warranty. Rubber was also chosen because it is machine washable and environmentally friendly, it requires no special disposal measures. Due to the special purification of this material with a maximum content protein less than 10 µg/g
of material, chances for allergenic reactions are negligible (test of BFGA, Institute at the Ruhr University, Bochum, Germany http://www.bgfa.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/e/index.php
The Conform cushion cover supplied with each cushion will protect the cushion from general wear and tear. It is zipped and has a non-slip base with a multi-stretch cotton top to assure stability and consistent pressure relief performance.
The cushion is inflated using a standard hand pump. By immersing your body into the cushion, each air cell conforms independently and adapts itself to your body contours. The high pressures normally created when we sit are evenly distributed over the entire surface area of the cushion, and away from our bony prominences. Skin break down can be prevented and the healing process of existing pressure sores can be improved.
The bottleneck design at the base of each cell allows for localised airflow, which is vital in the care of sores. It prevents heat build up as it allows for ventilation due to air being able to circulate at all times when you are seated on the cushion. Moist skin is more prone to break. The cells design allows for the use of the cover plate. You can depress individual cells if a pressure sore is present to reduce contact under that area, to speed up the healing process and to allow you to spend more time sitting whilst the sore heals
