The Memory Foam Mattress Designer Supreme is a complete viscoelastic memory foam bed mattress and designed for use on firm or flexible bed bases. This is a UK manufactured mattress that is used widely within the UK Healthcare and private market. The Supreme and Supreme Deluxe mattresses are made up of an upper layer of 7 cm high-density viscoelastic temperature sensitive high-grade memory foam, which is fused with an 8 cm high resilient polyurethane foam base.
Viscoelastic Memory Foam is an advanced material originally developed for the NASA space programme to relieve the pressure built up from the G-Force experienced by astronauts during lift offs. This foam has the properties of taking heat and weight of the body and it conforms to the body contours. When areas of the body have been over stressed by prolonged pressure we automatically move position and redistribute weight. If an area becomes warm the cells require more oxygen, if the area is too cold the cells will automatically produce less energy. In both cases the cells are prone to damage (bedsores - pressure sores). The areas of the body most likely to be affected are those bony prominences close to the surface - i.e. shoulder blades, elbows, sacrum, hips (pelvis) and heels. Even if not 'at risk' of developing pressure sores, general fatigue and degeneration, particularly in the spinal region, cause us to reposition throughout our sleep in order to relieve aches and pains.
The Designer Supreme Deluxe Memory Foam Mattress was the first of it's kind to also incorporate a high-density soft foam mattress core wall support which makes it much more comfortable to sit on the edge of the bed and easier to get in and out for some of us. The Designer Supreme Mattress has unique pressure relieving properties at low as well as high pressure loads. When body heat and weight is applied to this Memory Foam Mattress it recognises shape and pressure and adjusts within 10 seconds, distributing the pressure evenly, improving circulation and preventing pressure build up in the prominent areas of the body so you have a totally relaxed sleep. This is because the foam is temperature sensitive memory foam, foam that reacts to body heat.
Foams are available in different grades and densities, all of which affect price, performance and durability of any mattress or mattress topper; the Designer Supreme and Supreme Deluxe mattresses are manufactured from memory foam that is high-grade high-density memory foam, it has a high weight per cubic foot density, to assure optimum pressure relief, comfort and durability of the foam. Over time the memory foam will gradually become softer, but the mattresses generally do not see much of a sag, this caused by the opening of some of the memory foam cells after manufacturing and also affected by the body weight applied to the foam. The softening of the foam is generally not noticed, it is lesser than would occur in a conventional inner spring-loaded mattresses and it takes some time before this happens. With heavy weight individuals this process may happen faster and be more noticeable due to increased pressure on parts of the mattress. The product is tested to the current strictest NHS mattress British flame retardant standard.
Viscoelastic foam is dense and sort of feels like wet clay, which is why it is enclosed in a fabric casing. All the Designer Supreme temperature sensitive viscoelastic memory foam mattresses are available with standard fleece velour cover for general home use or alternatively a vapour permeable wipe cover, which protects the foam from any accidental spillages or when user circumstances require a water repellent cover.
